Apple Health
On iPhone you can link Steps, Sleep, Active Energy, Stand Hours, and Walking Distance. HealthKit is the source. Despo caches derived daily totals and checkmarks on-device so heatmaps, widgets, and analytics work offline. Nothing is uploaded to a Despo server.

How it works
- In Despo: Settings → Apple Health. Turn on Health and pick the metrics you want.
- Despo creates normal habits for those metrics, linked on-device to each Health type.
- On launch, when you view Health habits, or after you change settings, Despo refreshes from HealthKit.
- It reads up to about 365 days of daily totals, compares each day to your goal, and writes yes / no / cleared checkmarks plus the day’s value into the same on-device habit entry store as manual check-ins.
HealthKit remains the source of truth. Despo caches derived daily results locally so the rest of the app can show history without querying HealthKit on every paint.
What we read from HealthKit
Only the metrics you select. We do not dump your Health library.
- Steps — daily step sum
- Distance — walking / running meters, shown as km
- Active energy — activity summary or burned kcal
- Stand hours — stand hours from the activity summary
- Sleep — asleep segments in a night window, as hours
Move and Stand goals may be read from today’s activity summary when Apple provides them, so habit targets can match your Health goals.

What is stored on your device
Habit entries. For each Health-linked habit and each day in the lookback window, Despo stores a checkmark (met goal / under goal / cleared) and the day’s Health total (for example 7,420 steps). That lives in the same local database as manual habit check-ins. Heatmaps, detail screens, analytics, widgets, and milestones for Health habits use these local copies.
Habit rows. Linked metrics are real habits (name, color, target, and so on). Which metric each habit uses is kept in on-device preferences, not as a HealthKit payload.
Settings. Whether Health is enabled, which metrics you track, goals, and per-habit metric mapping are preferences only. They are not day-by-day Health history.
What is not stored
- Full HealthKit sample history, workout streams, or heart-rate series
- A copy of Health data on a Despo server (there is no Despo cloud for habits or Health)
- Raw Health dumps in Google Drive or iCloud backups as a separate Health export — optional Drive/iCloud backup follows your habit backup settings, described on the Backups page
Health totals are never uploaded to us as a Health dump. Feature requests and support email are separate from Health sync.
In the app
- Health habits show a heart badge and update from Health automatically.
- Manual check-in cycling is disabled for those habits.
- Cards and heatmaps show the synced yes/no and totals from local entries.
- Sync runs again periodically so local entries can catch up with Health.
Stop syncing and remove local copies
- Open Despo → Settings → Apple Health and turn off Health or unlink metrics.
- Delete the Health-linked habits if you no longer want them on Home.
- Uninstalling the app removes the on-device database for that device, including cached Health-derived entries.
- Revoke Despo’s Health access in iOS Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices if you want Apple to stop sharing with the app.
